Five Hotels--And Hotel Bars--We Want To Experience

By Karen and Erica

Summer makes us think of travel, and travel makes us think of staying in fabulous hotels and sitting at their fabulous bars. Here are five we would love to visit:

Hilton Lunar Hotel. Where? The moon. Why? We want to spend the night on the moon, sitting at some amazing bar, dressed in moonlight silk, watching the earth go by while we sip champagne from a starlit flute. It is, after all, the fiftieth anniversary of the first moonwalk. Sadly, the hotel on the moon exists only in Hilton’s imagination for now. Transport to the moon seems well on the way, but we can’t afford to go at present rates. So we’ll go see the moon at the Met and sip a martini at the Roof Garden Bar.

TWA Hotel. Where? New York. Why? In 1962, the Eero Saarinen TWA terminal was the most elegant structure we could imagine, and we still love its swoops. We think a Cosmopolitan would be the right approach while sitting in the new infinity pool overlooking the planes taking off and landing in front of us. Can’t wait. We’ll try to dredge up a Mondrian dress and some go go boots from the 60s.

Lover’s Deep. Where? Deep water, anywhere. Why? Sleeping—luxuriously—on a submarine sounds cool. We want to lie under mysterious blue waters with flashing fish flying all around us. A seriously different venue. The price is a bit steep. Maybe we just console ourselves with Underwater Punch, as we sit by a local pool.

Icehotel. Where? Sweden. Why? Ice structures are beautiful, and impermanent, which makes them so enticing. A summer night in a room at the Icehotel seems the stuff of fantasy. We are a little hesitant about sleeping on ice, though. Maybe if we wear polar fleece, and drink frozen vodka cocktails, all will be well.

Burj Al Arab. Where? Dubai. Why? It is said to be the most luxurious hotel in the world. We don’t know about that (though we’d love to be asked to test the proposition) but it is amazingly beautiful. And its construction story is fascinating. We’ll sit in the bar, dressed in something golden, sipping Eyes Looking At Heaven.

We can dream!
