Tailors: A New Necessity For A New Year

Tailors: A New Necessity For A New Year

Sometimes we see our bodies in the mirror, or peer at one of our parts--arm, thigh--and do not recoil. Other times, not so much. And still others, it’s “really?! When did that happen?” All in all, though, we’ve come to accept that it is what it is. We will exercise and maybe even enhance here and there—but we are not going to stop the aging process and we don't want to look as if we are trying to.

Still, we have begun to realize that to truly look our age as we see it, we need to make some adjustments. Though our bodies have shifted, our clothes have not. Jackets that once fit beautifully are now unexpectedly tight in the wrong places. Beautiful slacks with wide legs that used to make us feel like Katherine Hepburn going to battle we now swim in. And long coats that once announced our entrance now make us look like clowns. It is bewildering. And annoying. Even if the clothes are thirty years old.

It used to be that when clothes no longer fit, or fell out of style, we exchanged them for new ones that worked. We kept really beloved pieces—like the man’s tuxedo jacket, old when we bought it and painted with sparkly fish—but for the most part as our bodies changed, after children or with age, we moved on.

But we don’t really want to do that any more—at least not to the extent we once did. We like the personal styles that we developed over the years. We love our clothes. And frankly, as we have written before, there isn’t a lot out there that is beckoning to us to replace what we have.

So now we have a new very important person in our lives: our tailor. It took us a long time to find a good one and finally, on our friend Susan’s recommendation, we did. For years, the lovely lady at our dry cleaner was perfectly satisfactory. But now we need more. We need our treasures to be refitted to fit our new shapes. And that takes some expertise.

We decided we needed to find a good one--someone we could trust. Someone who would suggest a nip there or tuck here to ensure that we were wearing our clothes and they were not wearing us. Someone who sometimes has to say that there really is nothing that can be done.

A good tailor helps you create style that fits perfectly. Find one.
