It's Fall. Time For White. Ten Ideas.

By Erica and Karen

Apparently last week summer ended and it became fall. We’re not buying it—yet—but we know fall will come, so we’re getting ready. We get cranky when people tell us not to wear white after Labor Day, a holdover from the time people lived rather differently, so we’re in the mood for lots of white this fall.

  • We might start with these Adidas track pants. We are not aficionados of wearing gym clothes all day, and we usually wear jeans for casual days, but these seem as if they would look pretty good with a jacket. And we think wide leg trousers are still in—though we could be wrong.

  • To go with whatever pants we have, we like the idea of a jean jacket. Actually, Erica is set but Karen has to stop borrowing Erica’s. This from Tommy Bahama looks pretty cool. And if we want to depart from the white theme, we could go artsy, like this.

  • A long white skirt is always excellent—unless it is raining. Here’s one in a nice shape from Joseph. We might pair it with red Converse platform high tops and a fitted red cardigan, maybe by Sandro.

  • A cozy turtleneck will be essential. A long white one would be elegant, over leggings, maybe faux snake? That’ll show people what 70 looks like!

  • Then there’s evening wear. We have absolutely no need for serious evening clothes just now—but it is good to be prepared for the glittering fall season, and, thank heaven, Broadway is back. Maybe this jacket would work. With the Adidas?

  • Going for white jewelry as well may be a bit much. But we like this chunky necklace.

  • We don’t want to be obsessive about white, we like blue too. Here’s a really brilliant jacket from Layayette 148, a gorgeous blue and a black black. Both sides go with white jeans. It’s expensive, so just think of it as two jackets.

  • Some days, we may need footwear other than sneakers. We could be talked into these sweater boots from Everlane. Crazy idea. We also like rough and ready boots, like these. For days that are not too chilly, we really like these Turkish Modern flats. They come in all kinds of colors and some metallics. And of course white.

  • We don’t expect to be wearing coats any time soon, but NYC weather can fool you. We love these Norma Kamali puffer jackets and coats. Silver goes well with white. We are also thinking of adorning an old black puffer with a white pattern now that we have found paints that work on fabric surfaces.

  • Whether they have good white clothes for now or not, we are happy to see so many designers offering recycled and reused items. We have been going to vintage and consignment stores for decades, but now the brands are doing it themselves. Coach now has refurbished, re(loved) bags. Patagonia, Burberry, Nike and many others are trending that way. And brands like Lafayette 148 are paying close attention to how their fine fabrics are made, with an eye to sustainability.

OK, if summer has to end, we have options.
